Here are a 10 simple tips to achieve your fantasy closet:
/ Purge purge purge. Be ruthless and be methodical. Anything you haven't worn in 6 months, TOSS. Create 3 piles: one for nosy friends, one for charity, one for the garbage (odd socks, ripped pantyhose etc). Here's a clever, helpful tip: At the beginning of the season, hang all of the clothes in your closet with the hangers "backwards." When you wear something, put it back with the hanger facing forward. At the end of the season, the clothes with the hangers backwards are the clothes you don't wear. Get rid of them by donating or selling!
/ If you are short on space, consider grouping your counter-season pieces together and moving them to another part of the house (spare bedroom, under bed). An edited, un-cluttered closet will make mornings efficient! Think creatively - a gorgeous trunk, some vintage-inspired suitcases...Style and purpose are the new buzz words.
/ Buy yourself some matching hangers. Wooden are gorgeous, but if you'd rather save your $$ for some more threads, the same colour and same style plastic hanger will also do the trick. Uniformity will help eliminate visual chaos.
/ Stock up on dividers, wicker baskets, glamorous hat boxes or other quirky storage ideas for belts, scarves, swimwear. A place for everything and everything in its place!
/ Hang like items with like items. Summer dresses together. Jackets and blazers together. Blouses and delicate tops together. Or you could colour-code if you prefer. This will save you time AND help you identify what you definitely don't need to buy more of!
/ Display your shoes like art! Re-purpose antique cabinets, ladders, make your own lazy susan..or should we say 'lazy shoe-zan'! Same applies to accessories and handbags. Why hide away your pretties?
/ Style your dressing space! Think of your wardrobe, no matter how small or how big, as a boutique. Make it pretty, make it edgy, make it sleek - whatever you do, make it reflect your personal style aesthetic. If you have room consider sourcing a feminine pouffe or a stunning little stool. A gorgeous lamp will bring warmth to your boudoir, as will a stunning mirror.
/ God is in the details. Add framed artwork that is sentimental to you. Mood boards, inspirational quotes...just go for it!
/ If you don't have a built-in dream wardrobe like in the movies, why not make rolling racks and curtains work for you! We love the industrial-chic and edginess that these can bring to a space..
/ Add a mannequin for a bit of wow factor as well as an incredibly practical addition to your space. Drape necklaces, hook earrings, hang handbags, loop scarves, stack hats. The uses are endless!
Go on! Get cracking!
